Padel Court Light Levels

In the UK, padel court lighting should meet the requirements outlined in EN 12193 – Light and lighting: Sports lighting, the European standard adopted by the British Standards Institution (BSI). These guidelines define the minimum illumination levels and uniformity needed for safe and enjoyable play, whether for casual games or televised tournaments.

EN 12193 lighting classes for padel

  • Class I (International & National Competition)Indoor: ≥ 750 lux, Outdoor: ≥ 500 lux; uniformity ≥ 0.7. Suitable for top-level matches with spectators and broadcast coverage.
  • Class II (Club Competition & Training)Indoor: ≥ 500 lux, Outdoor: ≥ 300 lux; uniformity ≥ 0.6. Ideal for league matches, club play, and advanced training.
  • Class III (Recreational & Community Use)Indoor: ≥ 300 lux, Outdoor: ≥ 200 lux; uniformity ≥ 0.5. Sufficient for casual games where competitive precision is less critical.

Uniformity is just as important as lux level. Even lighting ensures the ball remains visible across the whole court, reducing glare and eliminating dark patches, a particular challenge with padel’s glass walls. For outdoor courts, lighting should also be designed to minimise spill light and comply with local planning restrictions on glare and light pollution.

Lighting Class Table
Lighting Class Horizontal Illuminance
Illuminance (lux) Uniformity
Outdoor Indoor
I 500 750 0.7
II 300 500 0.7
III 200 300 0.5
